What is the Role of ACEE-INDIA?
MCI/DNB has recognized Emergency Medicine as a specialty, encouraged hospitals to start full-fledged EM departments, and allowed Medical colleges and teaching hospitals to initiate the creation of Academic Departments of Emergency Medicine across India.
EM as a specialty is new to India. As a science, EM is a collage of all disciplines as it targets addressing acute issues across existing faculties of medicine and surgery, including pediatrics, anesthesia, orthopedics, OB-GYN, psychiatry and pulmonology. This leaves EM with no parent discipline, as no discipline is immune from the concept of Emergencies related to their discipline.
This fact is both a challenge and an opportunity because firstly we will need trained emergency clinicians which can be drawn from any discipline to train and staff emergency departments until we can have enough residency trained and qualified emergency physicians.
With the advent and growth of EM, young emergency clinicians will need to be brought up to speed about Emergency Knowledge from other disciplines. For example an Orthopedician wanting to teach EM or practice EM will have to learn EKG,management of Myocardial infarction, etc.
To facilitate this process and award identity, ACEE is being founded with the Fellowship acting as an identity to create an Elite Group of Pioneers who have gone through the process of learning and qualifying to be Academic and Clinical leaders in Teaching, Researching, innovating, and Treating at Departments of Emergency Medicine across India.
